RealTrekking
Discovering La Gomera together
With our ¡Anda ya! RealTrekking trekking tour, you can discover and experience La Gomera firsthand. We hike across the island from east to west in five days. We descend into deep valleys, hike through formerly cultivated terrace fields, and pass by a unique laurel forest, which is a national park and UNESCO World Heritage. We visit farmers and artist-craftsmen, and we watch them work and learn how the typical products of Gomera are made. After each hike, we stop off at a local bar or restaurant and treat ourselves to Canarian food.
| Itinerary |
Day 1: Arrival |
We pick you up at the airport Tenerife Sur and take you to the ferry in Los Cristianos. There you will receive your ferry ticket for the trip to La Gomera. In San Sebastian de La Gomera, we pick you up at the ferry and take you to your accommodation. There you will meet the other participants of the trekking tour. You will receive in-depth information on the town of San Sebastián and on the dinner possibilities. |
Day 2: Starter hike |
We meet for a joint breakfast under palm trees in the market square of San Sebastián. After breakfest, we begin our starter tour into the mountains of La Gomera. We ascend through terrace landscapes and formerly cultivated fields, passing herds of goats and flocks of sheep, until we arrive at a small bar, where we stop and have the opportunity to taste the typical food as a small lunch. Walking time: about 4 hours / difference in altitude: appr. 900 m ascent / distance: appr. 8.5 km
In the afternoon, there will be time for a stroll around the town or a bath in the Atlantic Ocean. At the end of the day, we meet for a joint dinner in one of the town's many restaurants and talk about the itinerary of the next day. |
Day 3: Full-day hike |
After a joint breakfast in a coffee bar in the town, we will be taken to the starting point of our hike, a small village in the southern part of the island. First, we hike down to the valley of Benchijigua, one of the palmiest valleys of the island. Afterwards we ascend, passing impressing volcanic necks, until we reach the Canarian laurel forest, which is millions of years old. Here we learn interesting facts about the native flora and fauna. For our lunch break, we stop at a bar in the small hamlet El Cedro, which is famous for its excellent watercress soup and the goats' meat typical of the mountains. After this refreshment, we hike downwards, passing the largest waterfall of the island, until we reach the fertile valley Hermigua, where we take up quarters today. Walking time: about 6 hours / difference in altitude: about 500m ascent, about 800m descent / distance: about 13km |
Day 4: Full-day hike |
A hike with wonderful views of the green North of the island (and of Tenerife, if the weather is adequate) awaits us. The highlights of today's program are village Agulo, the climbing of the red wall and the visitors' centre of the national park. In the evening, we will reach Vallehermoso, the former fruit and green store of the island. We will learn interesting things about the way the people of La Gomera live, about their ancestors and about the time of the conquest of the island by the Spanish as well as the important events which happened here during the Spanish civil war. Walking time: about 6 hours / difference in altitude: about 900m ascent, about 800m descent / distance: about 13km |
Day 5: Full-day hike |
After breakfast we hike on the mountain ridge up to the central plateau until we reach the holy springs of Epina. There are many legends and myths about the water of these springs, but one thing is sure: it is one of the best waters of the island. On we hike through man-high bushes and shrubs through an especially beautiful and well preserved patch of the Canarian laurel forest. A romantic picnic site in the middle of the forest makes us wish for a break before we hike on to our destination for today, the mountain valley Las Hayas. Walking time: about 6 hours / difference in altitude: about 1050m ascent, about 100m descent / distance: about 14km |
Day 6: Full-day hike |
Today we get up really high when hiking on the central plateau in the center of the island. At first, we reach the potters’ valley El Cercado where we can visit the potteries. Afterwards we climb the legendary mountain top Garajonay, with a height of 1,487 m the highest mountain of La Gomera. We continue our hike on a panoramic trail with a breathtaking view with direction to the table mountain which we can climb if the weather allows it, until we finally reach Chipude, today’s stopover. Walking time: about 5 hours / difference in altitude: about 450m ascent, about 450m descent/distance: about 13km
|
Day 7: Half-day hike |
On the last trekking day, we hike down to the valley of the great king. We walk through the remains of formerly cultivated terrace fields down to Valle Gran Rey. Wonderful views of the valley and the bells of free walking goats accompany us on our way to the sea, where a refreshing bath in the blue Atlantic Ocean awaits us. Walking time: about 4 hours / difference in altitude: ca. 1000m descent / distance: about 10km
In the afternoon, there will be time for relaxing and unwinding. Capture the flair of long gone hippie days, saunter along the promenade or directly at the beach, and let it all hang out when the blood-red sun sinks into the sea after a long summer day.
|
Day 8: Departure or Day off |
Today you will have a day without hike which you can use for relaxing at the pool or at one of the valley's beaches or for other activities. Valle Gran Rey offers plenty of possibilities. Experience whales and dolphins when going on an excursion by boat or book a bicycle tour and take a look at the island from the bicycle. In the evening, you can dine out in one of the numerous restaurants, and later you can let the day end with a cocktail.
|
Day 9: Half-day hike |
A varied hike along a stream bed is our program for today. We hike up hill and down dale through a reed-jungle to the Barranco de Arure, an impressive gorge, until we reach the waterfall. There we can take a refreshment and make a small break for lunch. Afterwards we hike back to the village smoothly and let ourselves be spoilt with a freshly pressed fruit juice on the sun terrace. Walking time: about 3 hours / difference in altitude: about 250m ascent, about 250m descent / distance: about 5km |
Day 10: Relax and unwind |
Enjoy another day in Valle Gran Rey or take the ferry - for example - to Playa de Santiago, a peaceful fishers' village in the south of the island. |
